Good morning,
Update on the Eurasian Watermilfoil infestation in Lake Volney.

Due to the concerns that were coming in from several property owners about the abundance of lake weeds in shallow water, a couple of us decided to survey the lake.
We did inspections on Oct. 6, and Oct 8, and identified, mapped the location and density, and photographed the weeds.

On Oct. 13, We emailed the updated map to Holly at LeSueur County who forwarded the information on to MN DNR.

A reply email from Holly with LeSueur County informed us that MN DNR identified the photos as Sago Pondweed, which is native to Minnesota. We further researched Sago Pondweed vs Eurasian Milfoil and found MN DNR to be accurate.
This is Great News!!

The Sago Pondweed, although native to Minnesota, seems to be more dense this fall when compared to the past several years.
Time will tell in what it will be like next spring/summer.

The contractor that was hired by LeSueur County, treated the areas identified by MN DNR having Eurasian Milfoil, on Friday, Oct 10. They will inspect the treated areas around Oct. 24 to determine the results of the treatment.

Hopefully the treatment will eradicate the Eurasian Milfoil.

We will keep you updated as this progresses.

Thanks,

Good morning,
We became aware of a Eurasian Watermilfoil infestation in Lake Volney.
The DNR has been out to identify and map the lake. According to the map, the DNR team found Eurasian Watermilfoil on the east side of the boat launch at the southeast corner of the lake and a small concentration on the north side.
A few lakeshore property owners reported infestations on the west and southwest side as well.
We are working with LeSueur County to better identify and map the areas of infestation. LeSueur County will coordinate with a contractor to get the areas treated this fall.
To avoid spreading this invasive species, keep out of the infested areas as much as possible. Boat propellors fragment the plant and the fragments grow roots causing it to spread quickly.
We will keep you updated as this progresses.
Thanks,
Paul Skluzacek, COB
Lake Volney Association

Good afternoon,
Your lake association Board of Directors (BOD) has some updates to pass along to you.
First and foremost, if you haven’t paid your $100 annual membership dues for 2025 yet, we strongly encourage you to do so. Dues are used to support webpage hosting, purchase memberships to MN Lakes and Rivers, The Coalition of Lake Associations, and other affiliated organizations. These organizations are very supportive of our interests as lake property owners and depend on member funding to lobby state and federal legislation and provide public awareness which are in our best interests.
Your dues also support the annual meeting, lake water testing, annual picnic and other lake events, and make funds available for cost-share projects. Holding pond maintenance was the most recent project completed. When grant funding opportunities present themselves, they typically require cost share for us to receive the grant. We need every property owner’s dues payment to make all this possible. Please submit them to Dan Tuma or to me.
Second, the BOD is in need of a person that is familiar with website maintenance. The lake association website has been developed, however, we need someone with knowledge in this area to upload photos and quarterly board meeting minutes. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering a little time and knowledge in this, please contact Suzanne Boda or myself.
Roger Bauer, Mark Kubes, Dan Tuma, Kevin Skelly, and myself volunteered in harvesting lake weeds again this year. In 2023 we harvested six loads, in 2024 four loads were harvested, and this year we harvested ten loads. That’s quite a lot of nutrients removed from the lake. Thanks guys, for your help!
The BOD attended an information meeting at LeSueur County a few weeks ago regarding the Lake Volney Sub-watershed Assessment. Lake Volney was chosen as the first lake out of seven for the study and plan of action on improving water quality.

ISG has been retained by LeSueur County to make assessments and formulate a plan of action to address improving water quality through mitigating erosion, pollutants, and other influences that diminish water clarity and quality.

The following is an update from Holly Bushman:

ISG has been making good progress on modeling and the County’s new LiDAR data has been able to expediate this process.
We will be meeting with ISG next month and we should receive more detail that provides scenarios where suggested projects and practices should be installed and pollutant reductions.
From Mid-August to Mid-September, we will be reaching out to landowners that were identified in the scenarios.
Have a fun and safe summer!
On behalf of the LVA-BOD,
Paul Skluzacek. COB
